Like most of the state, Thurmond was once a thriving West Virginia town that was highly dependent on the railroad. A significant station on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, the town generated more than 20 percent of the business's income in 1910. Thurmond's wealth fell precipitously during the Great Depression and the 1950s, when diesel trains were invented. There are about ten people living in Thurmond right now. The village is a must-visit, it is a perfect complement to any journey that recounts the devastation caused by the Great Depression.
